Washington Redskins (+3) over TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Washington just caught a beating, and that’s why they are a perfect team to make a play on this week. The Bucs are a classic entertaining-but-bad team. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the right QB for them instead of Jameis Winston, but for all the benefits he brings to their passing game – which can be prolific – he can’t fix their wretched defense. Washington is a banged-up team; they are down four offensive lineman, and rely heavily on their road graders to pave the way for Adrian Peterson. That’s why you can take advantage of the matchup here, getting points against the NFL’s worst defense per FootballOutsiders.com. Even if Peterson struggles to get going again, Alex Smith can assault the Bucs through the air to Josh Doctson, a supremely talented receiver who will be forced to be heavily targeted by default (injuries).

OAKLAND RAIDERS (+10.5) over Los Angeles Chargers

It’s D-I-F-F-I-C-U-L-T to return to the Raiders well, but it’s really tough for me to see a double-digit home underdog in a division rivalry tilt. The Chargers are proving to be one of the best teams in football, but rivalries and division matchups don’t always follow the rules. The Chargers are excellent, particularly on offense, but they can be gashed in the running game. Oakland can survive here by pounding the ball to Doug Martin and using Jalen Richard in the short passing game to control clock and time of possession. Yes, it’s tough to make a purely football-based argument for the Raiders, but that’s my best shot. The real reason to like this game? EVERYONE is on the Chargers. 95.8 percent of the action is on the Bolts as of this writing, which usually means it’s time to sprint in the opposite direction. Hold your nose and pull the lever for Oakland.

New York Giants (+3.5) over SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

The Giants, like Oakland, are very tough to take seriously right now. But they’ve had a bye week to get inventive with their embarrassment of riches at the skill positions, and they’re taking on an aggressively mediocre 49ers defense. On the side of the ball, the Giants should be able to slow down San Francisco. Nick Mullens balled out on the hapless Raiders, but the Giants have had some tape to study, and it’s hard to imagine the NFL is going to be that easy for an undrafted player. This line is an overreaction to Mullens’ showing in primetime.
